Umling La Extreme Ride FAQ

What licence do I need?

A valid motorcycle licence from your home country plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Australians can get an IDP from their state motoring club. Riders must be 18+.

How fit do I need to be, and what about altitude?

This tour starts in Leh (about 3,500 m) with a rest and acclimatisation day. You should be in good general health and comfortable on long, rough riding days. Our support crew carries oxygen and first aid, but we are not a medical provider, so please see your GP before you travel.

What is the minimum group size?

A tour runs with a minimum of 5 riders. If a departure doesn’t reach 5 riders, we’ll contact you well ahead of time to talk through your options.

What’s included?

Your motorcycle (Royal Enfield Himalayan series), riding gear (helmet, gloves and jacket), accommodation, airport transfers, one backup car with mechanic, one luggage car, bike fuel, meals, oxygen support and Inner Line Permits. Not included: international and domestic flights, travel insurance and riding boots.

How much is the deposit?

An AUD $100 non-refundable booking deposit secures your place. 50% is due 60 days before the tour starts. See our booking and cancellation policy for the full terms.

What is the best month to ride?

Our 2027 season runs May to September, while the high passes are open. Early season has more snow on the peaks and cold mornings, mid-season has the warmest valley days, and late season tends to bring clear skies and cooler nights.

How high is Umling La?

Umling La is 5,798 m (about 19,022 ft) in eastern Ladakh, a Guinness-certified record (2021). At that height there is roughly half the oxygen you have at sea level, so the tour builds in lighter days in Padum (Day 4) and Leh (Day 8) before the highest day.

Is oxygen support provided?

Yes. Oxygen support is included on every tour. Our backup car carries oxygen and first aid, and the crew keeps a close eye on every rider on the high days.

Do I need permits for Umling La?

Yes. Eastern Ladakh, including the Hanle and Umling La area, needs Inner Line Permits. They are included in the tour, and we arrange them for every rider. Just bring your passport and Indian e-Visa.

What riding experience do I need?

This is a challenging ride for confident, experienced riders. You should be comfortable on gravel, broken roads and water crossings, and with long days of up to 12–14 hours in the saddle, including stops. It is not suited to a first ride on dirt.

Do I get a certificate for riding Umling La?

Yes. Every rider who rides Umling La, on any of our five tours, receives an Umling La completion certificate.

The route takes you across the vast Changthang Plateau, offering one final opportunity to witness the wild beauty of this high-altitude desert. As you approach the lake, anticipation builds. Then, suddenly, the iconic blue waters of Pangong appear on the horizon – and nothing can prepare you for its breathtaking beauty! This 134-kilometre-long lake extends from India into Tibet, and its colours are magical – shifting from azure to turquoise to sapphire blue depending on the light and time of day. Made famous by Bollywood films like '3 Idiots' and 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan,' Pangong Tso is a photographer's paradise. Set up camp right by the lakeside, dip your feet in the crystal-clear (and freezing!) waters, and watch the sunset transform the lake and surrounding mountains into a canvas of gold, pink, and purple.
