What each inclusion means in practice

A bare list tells you little, so here is what each of the ten inclusions covers on a D’Himalayan Riders tour.

1. Royal Enfield Himalayan series motorcycle. You ride a Royal Enfield Himalayan series motorcycle, built for Ladakh’s high passes and rough roads and serviced by our mechanics. Riders are responsible for repair costs for damage beyond normal wear and tear.

2. Riding gear (helmet, gloves, jacket). A helmet, gloves and riding jacket are provided. Riding boots are not included, so bring boots you’re comfortable riding in for long days of up to 12–14 hours including stops.

3. Accommodation. Accommodation is twin-share, with single rooms on request. Ask us about single rooms when you enquire.

4. Meals. Meals are included as per the itinerary, along with unlimited mineral water, tea and coffee.

5. Bike fuel. Fuel for your motorcycle is included on every tour.

6. Airport transfers. On Leh-start tours, our team meets you at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport and takes you to your hotel in Leh, and takes you back to the airport on departure day. On the two Delhi-start tours, our ground team receives you at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Day 1.

7. Ride captain. Every tour is led by an experienced, English-speaking ride captain. Day 1 includes a full expedition and safety briefing covering the route, riding protocols and altitude awareness.

8. One backup car with mechanic. A backup car with a mechanic travels with the group, carrying first aid. A separate luggage car carries your bags, so you ride without a loaded bike.

9. Oxygen support. Our backup team carries emergency oxygen cylinders. On Leh-start tours, Day 1 is a full rest and acclimatisation day in Leh (about 3,500 m). On Delhi-start tours, the route starts low in Delhi (about 231 m), reaches Manali (about 2,050 m) and then goes into Lahaul and Zanskar (the Ultimate Himalayan Ride goes via Spiti first) before the biggest passes. We are not a medical provider, so please speak to your GP about altitude before you travel.

10. Inner Line Permits. Parts of Ladakh are protected areas, and the Indian e-Visa alone doesn’t cover them. We arrange all Inner Line Permits for every tour. You just send us your passport and visa details ahead of time, and keep your passport and permit copies handy on the ride.

The high passes your package covers

The permits, fuel, backup car and oxygen support matter most on the high passes. Depending on your tour, you can cross passes including Shinku La (5,091 m), Baralacha La (4,890 m), Khardung La (5,359 m) and, on every tour, Umling La (5,798 m, about 19,022 ft). One example of a tough day: on the Ladakh Circuit Ride, the Hanle to Umling La and back day is Distance: ~180 km (round trip) • Riding Hours: ~7–8 hrs, and the backup car, oxygen support and ride captain are with you for all of it.

Your Umling La completion certificate

All five of our tours ride Umling La (5,798 m, about 19,022 ft), a Guinness-certified record (2021). Every rider who rides Umling La, on whichever of our five tours, receives an Umling La completion certificate. It is a keepsake of the ride, separate from the ten inclusions above.

What you pay for yourself

Because every tour is a ground package, these are your own responsibility:

  • International and domestic flights. There are no direct flights from Australia to Leh, so most riders fly to Delhi first. See flights from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
  • Travel insurance. It is mandatory for all riders, and we require comprehensive cover that includes motorcycle riding at high altitude and emergency helicopter evacuation. If you leave a tour early or need medical evacuation, those costs are yours. See our travel insurance tips.
  • Riding boots.
  • Your Indian visa. Apply only through the official Government of India e-Visa site, and check current fees and processing times there.

Comparing us with other Himalayan tour quotes

When you compare quotes from different operators, ask each one the same questions:

  1. Is fuel for the bike included?
  2. Are meals included, and which ones?
  3. Is there a backup car with a mechanic travelling with the group?
  4. Is oxygen support included?
  5. Are Inner Line Permits included and arranged for you?
  6. Are airport transfers included at both ends?
  7. Is riding gear provided, and which items?

On every D’Himalayan Riders tour the answer is yes to all of these, and the full price is stated up front in AUD. Ask us for your written proposal, which sets out the trip particulars and costs.
